Here are 10 Benefits of Drinking Coconut Water Amid the Omicron Wave

1. Rich in nutrients

Citing the launch received by IDN Times, nutrition experts, sports nutritionists, and nutrition consultants at the Fitness Clinic of the Royal Sports Performance Center Senayan City, Dr. Rita Ramayulis DCN, M.Kes., said that the supply of nutrients is very important to maintain the body's immune performance against COVID-19.

Because the "war" against SARS-CoV-2 can deplete our energy and supply of nutrients, it is necessary to consume nutritionally balanced foods/drinks, such as coconut water.

"When infected, there will be a decrease in various nutrients in the body including total body fluids, and minerals ..., one of which is by consuming coconut water which also contains minerals," said Dr. Rita

Citing data from the Indonesian Food Formation Data and the United States Ministry of Food (USDA), about 100 g of fresh coconut water has these nutritional values:

  • Water: 95.5 g (g)
  • Energy: 17 calories
  • Carbohydrates: 3.8 g
  • Calcium: 15 milligrams (mg)
  • Phosphorus: 8 mg
  • Magnesium: 60 mg
  • Iron: 0.2 mg
  • Sodium: 1 mg
  • Potassium: 149.0 mg
  • Copper: 0.04 mg
  • Zinc: 0.1 mg
  • Vitamin C: 1 mg

"The body is well hydrated and along with eating a balanced diet will heal faster," added Dr. Rita.

2. Natural source of electrolytes

It's no secret that coconut water is seen as a natural sports drink, this is because coconut water contains electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium. The electrolytes in coconut water play a major role in the immune mechanism to fight infection. Therefore, electrolyte deficiencies should be avoided as much as possible.

"Electrolytes in coconut water can help regulate fluid balance, prevent dehydration, and ensure proper muscle function. Of course, we must also ensure adequate protein and carbohydrates when exposed. In addition, these electrolytes are good to eat after exercise," said Dr. Rita.

3. Prevent hypertension and cardiovascular disease

Usually, potassium compounds are close to bananas. However, did you know that the potassium content in coconut water is higher than in medium-sized bananas? There are more and more arguments for drinking coconut water. Of course, you can experience the benefits for your heart and blood vessels.

Various previous and recent studies have found that potassium content is good for overall cardiovascular health, from preventing heart disease, hypertension, to stroke. This is because high potassium can remove sodium from the blood through the urine and relax the blood vessels.

4. Good for digestion

Next, Dr. Rita explained the benefits of magnesium in coconut water. As one of the electrolytes, apparently, this content is good for digestion. Adequate hydration is generally important to help regulate bowel movements.

"Coconut water contains magnesium, a mineral that helps keep things moving and keeps constipation at bay," says Dr. Rita in a launch.

According to various studies, coconut water helps fill body fluids in diarrhea patients. However, it must be remembered that consuming too much coconut water actually has a laxative effect on the stomach and triggers diarrhea. So, just consume as needed.

5. Good for diabetes

For diabetic patients, sweet things are prohibited. However, coconut water can be one way out. Although evidence for humans is still being sought, coconut water has been found to suppress blood sugar levels.

In addition to digestion, the magnesium in coconut water is good for diabetes. This is because magnesium can increase insulin sensitivity while reducing blood sugar levels in patients with prediabetes to type 2 diabetes.

However, it must be remembered, coconut water has natural sugar carbohydrates (which are broken down in the body into sugar). Therefore, for some diabetic patients, ask the doctor about the consumption of coconut water and consume coconut water as needed.

6. Natural antioxidants

Like other fruits, coconut is also inseparable from the benefits of anti-oxidants. This benefit is believed to be obtained from coconut water. Just as we know, anti-oxidants are important to resist oxidative depression because free radicals are substances in the body that can cause acute illness.

The findings regarding the anti-oxidant benefits in coconut water were tested in various animal studies but not in humans. However, we can expect the same anti-oxidant benefits of coconut water for the human body.

7. Maintain kidney health

Another unexpected benefit of coconut water is that it provides protection to the kidneys. Various recent studies have found that coconut water reduces the risk of developing kidney stones because this drink breaks down the content of citrate, potassium, and chloride (which can cause kidney stones) when urinating.

Furthermore, when tested on animals, the content in coconut water can facilitate kidney damage in diabetic conditions. While it has to be retested in humans, it is predicted that these benefits will not differ much when applied to prediabetic and diabetic patients.

8. Good for weight

Coconut water is good for those who are trying to diet. According to Dr. Rita, hydration is very important to maintain body cells and increase metabolism. However, thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so excessive calorie consumption makes the scales fly.

From its content, coconut water does have more calories than plain water. However, Dr. Rita explained that when compared to sugary drinks such as soda, juice, or other sweet drinks, coconut water has lower calories. In addition, coconut water also does not contain fat, let alone cholesterol.

"The simple process of replacing sugary drinks with coconut water can help you cut calories for a week," says Dr. Rita.

9. Rehydration after vaccination or when you are sick

When sick (whether COVID-19 or not), the company strives to prevent the virus or bacteria that causes it. This can deplete the supply of fluids, especially when we experience some symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Apart from being sick, while rolling out the COVID-19 vaccination, quite some people have complained of various effects, such as low fever, headaches, body discomfort, and vomiting. Although this effect is quite mild, to quickly subside, supplying fluids to the body is fundamental.

In that scenario, Dr. Rita writes that coconut water can help fill fluids and balance electrolytes compared to plain water. In fact, in some variations of coconut water, there are vitamins C and D that provide immune mechanism support.

"In addition, it is also important to make sure the body is well hydrated after vaccination, one of which can be done by drinking coconut water," added Dr. Rita.

10. Maintain skin quality

Various studies have praised the benefits of coconut water for rejuvenating the skin and protecting it from various types of damage. Because it has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, coconut water can help get rid of acne.

In addition, coconut water has the same benefits as a moisturizer for the skin, so it keeps the skin moist. Plus anti-oxidants, drinking coconut water can prevent premature aging of the skin. However, this benefit needs to be examined more deeply.

Coconut water is not a cure for COVID-19!

That's a list of benefits that we can get from a glass of fresh coconut water. When healthy or sick, you can add coconut water to your daily diet.

Even so, coconut water cannot be used to cure COVID-19. There is no evidence that coconut water has any of these benefits and there is no single dietary approach for COVID-19. However, there is nothing wrong with consuming coconut water to prevent dehydration and provide support for immune mechanisms.

"Pay attention to the symptoms you are experiencing, and if you have signs such as difficulty breathing, persistent chest pressure or pain, or any new confusion, please contact the local medical personnel immediately," Dr. Rita.
