5 Basics of Computer Networking (Networking)

Netgenz - Technology  Computer and Internet  In discussing computer networks, it is seen that what is often considered as the basis is the network topology itself. It is true, network topology describes how a network is structured and shows the flow of data traffic that occurs from a computer network.

However, without compromising the role of topology, it turns out that there are elements that are somewhat more basic than a network. These five bases are arguably far more basic than a topology. Why is that? because without these 5 things, it is impossible for a computer to be connected to each other.

1. Network Interfaces

Every device that will connect to a network must have interfaces. In the computer there is a NIC (network interface card) as the interface used to connect to the network. In addition to computers, other devices also use NICs to be able to connect to a network, such as HUBs, Switches, Routers, and others. Some things that must be considered in choosing a NIC are:

Slot type

The max speed of the NIC is 1000 Megabits per second

2. Transmission Media

Transmission media is a device that connects one computer to another or a computer with other network devices (hubs, switches, routers, etc.) in a computer network. Currently there are two transmission media commonly used, namely wired and wireless. ). Some types of cables that are often used to form a network include UTP, STP, Coaxial, and Optical Fiber. things that need to be considered regarding the use of cable media are:

Transfer speed

Maximum length to be able to transmit data

Type of connector used (different cable, different connector)

3. Network Operating System, abbreviated NOS

Network Operating System also includes a very important role. NOS is developed and used to support the performance of computer networks. including also as a supporter of security systems, sharing, and also the client server. Some of the operating systems commonly used for networking are Linux (usually used for servers), MikroTik RouterOS (this operating system is specifically for routers), Windows Server (2003, 2008, 2012), and Windows Client (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1). )

4. Network Device

Network devices are equipment used in networking to support network systems. Examples of network devices are switches, hubs, repeaters, routers and modems.

5. Network protocol

Network protocols are the rules that apply about how each component in a computer network must communicate. Basically, protocols are distinguished into communication protocols, transport protocols and application protocols.

Examples of communication protocols are Internet Protocol or IP, IPX, Netbeui.

Examples of transport protocols are TCP and UDP.

Examples of Applications protocols are FTP, HTTP, HTTPS and so on.

These five basics are the basis for the formation of a computer network that allows two or more computers to communicate with each other, share information with each other. Without these five things, there will be no such thing as internet, facebook, twitter, chat, and so on. Hope it is useful.
